Samuel Fosso
Born in Kumba, Cameroon, 1962. Brought up in eastern Nigeria by his Grandparents.
He left Nigeria due to extreme life hardship (Biafran War) to join his brother (who at the time had a furniture-making business in Bangui, Central Africa Republic. From there, he became an apprentice to a studio passport photographer; thence he learned the trade and then later acquired his own studio.
Back in 1994, Samuel Fosso was discovered by a French photographer who at the time was organising an exhibition. As a result of this, a series of his work began to show in Europe and the USA. Fosso’s photograph is all self-portraits, nevertheless, Samuel questions many issues through the guises that his persona adopts.
His earliest photograph dates back to the 1970s are believed to be among his most powerful works and are a statement of his own talent.
