Artist Research 3 Lynette Yiadom-Boakye

Updated: May 25, 2021

Born in London, UK. 1977

she studied at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and then later, attended Falmouth College of Arts and the Royal Academy Schools.

Most of her works are made from a combination of found objects, imaginations, and drawings. They are painted in muted colours and she usually paints black figures.

Lynette drawing of black people is something that comes naturally and has sometimes carried a political meaning.

these are the three works that I became intrigued in

  1. '' Complication '' 2013, Oil on canvas, in here Lynette depicts 4 black men in their underpants, staring at one and another; this work portrays black normalcy, in my opinion in the painting, Lynette shows 4 black men in solidarity hence them having their arms on top of each other shoulders. which are less showed or found in European Art/western. her use of colours (differents types of colours layered on top of each other) and how she layers them, it's what makes the painting stands out.

  2. '' Condor and the Mole '' 2011, in my view, here Lynette once again depicts two black children (Girls), both looking down and they seem distracted by what on the ground. this gives me the impression that they might be on the beach or near a lake. hence dark grey gloomy colours for sky, ground. and she kind of tested the different shades of brown as such I can identify these colours e.g brown, hickory brown and chocolate.

  3. '' Condominium '' 2005, oil on canvas, Lynette depicted a figure sitting staring directly at the viewer, the sitter facial exp[session appears scary and funny. Lynette's use of humour and horror is seen throughout the painting and the title of the work.

She writes what she cannot draw.

She draws what she cannot writes.

In my opinion, Lynette’s paintings are powerful and are real poetry. I found her use of colour interesting as through having a closer look, I can see how many layers of different colours of paints she used. I also love how confident she is with the idea of expressing her imaginative black figures.

she really inspires me to learn and improve about how to mix different colours and use them
